After the fourth step in our treasure hunt in Agios Efstratios, let’s sail away to the fifth step, Lemnos!

Lemnos, untamed beauty in the North Aegean

In the days when people got sick and no suitable medicine could be found, there was an island in the North Aegean that promised hope and healing. Just a small handful of the miraculous volcanic soil of Lemnos would, it was said, do the trick and banish the illness.

Today, this very island retains its healing qualities in another sense. Its friendly inhabitants, serene, open landscapes and golden sand dunes offer balsam to body and soul. And as if these were not enough, there are unusual archaeological sites, romantic castles and scrumptious local products.

What to do in Lemnos

The castle of Myrina is the largest castle in the Aegean and has more than ten towers, proud protectors of the city’s population from pirates and external enemies. Every stone there carries a piece of history! 

How much do you really know about sponge-fishing? The Maritime and Sponge Museum of Lemnos aims to highlight the history of sponge-fishing on the island. Follow us there to guide you and learn about the local naval history.

Hands on! One of the best pottery workshops in Lemnos, which provides ceramics art crafts for sale is the “Hiroplathi” Ceramic Workshop. You will be taught how to give shape to basic ingredients and create your own art crafts.

Alyki salt lake is one of the two most important wetlands in the Greek island of Lemnos and belongs to the European Network of Natura 2000 Protected Areas.

 This lake in the summer season turns into a salt marsh with plenty of underwater seagrass, known as Posidonia Oceanica beds. Our local guide Anda, will offer you a circular route with intermediate stations from where one realizes how nature preserves us and teaches us how it affects the quality of life of the inhabitants of Lemnos.

Adventure and sailing in Lemnos go together! Anda will teach you on a sailing route all about this historical island and its environment. On the way out of the port you meet the Venetian Fortress of Myrina, the largest in the Aegean.

Leaving the coastline where the capital of the island, you successively meet islets where the wild bird nest, sandy and rocky shores, capes, harbor shelters, reefs, to the stunning cape Mourtzeflos with his lighthouse leading the seafarers to a safe path.
