Agios Efstratios, or « Ai Stratis » as called by its 250 residents is a true hidden gem of the Aegean Sea. 

With only one settlement, this **volcanic island’**s true attraction lies in its rich fauna and flora, for which it is included in the European Union’s Natura 2000 network.

In this island, locals live at a slow pace and love to talk with visitors about the island’s history and its most beautiful beaches, among fossilized oak tree forests…

What to do in Agios Efstratios

Agios Efstratios being a small natural paradise, we recommend that you explore it both on foot and with a mask and tuba. Several hikes are possible from the only village of the island, leading to sandy beaches and passing herds of friendly goats.

During a sailing cruise, you will have the chance to access secret beaches and dive into its clean waters to observe the fishes, sea meadows and caves. 

The best way to end your day is to join the locals in the few tavernas of the village and taste its fresh fish… Or lobster! Indeed, it is a specialty of the island sold at an affordable price.

Another interesting fact is that Agios Efstratios was used as an outpost for political prisoners in the 30s. Nowadays, we can visit its Museum of Democracy set in a former school, and one of the few traditional buildings that survived the 1968 earthquake.
