About this cruise

A week around the third leg of Halkidiki. Mount Athos from the sea, its monasteries on the cliffs, and the quiet bays of Ammouliani.

Athos is the peninsula you can see from every beach in Halkidiki and almost nobody visits. The only way to take it in properly is from the water, and that is what this week is for.

From Porto Carras or Paliouri we sail south, round the tip of Sithonia and enter the gulf that Athos closes on the east. The monasteries sit on the cliffs above the water. Women cannot land on Athos and men need a permit arranged well in advance, so we stay at sea, at the 500 metres the rules ask for. The evenings belong to Ammouliani and the bays around it.

The skipper plans each day around the wind, so there is no fixed route to print here, only the water we work. Three cabins sleep 6, four sleep 8, the catamaran 8. The price is for the boat, with skipper and cleaning, and fuel is settled at the end.

Cancellation policy

  • A 30% deposit confirms your booking.
  • Cancel more than 21 days before departure: no charge.
  • Between 21 and 7 days: 50% of the deposit.
  • Within 7 days: the full deposit.

Questions we get asked

Can we go ashore on Athos?

No. Women cannot land at all, and men need a permit that is arranged separately and well in advance. We see Athos from the boat, at the legal distance.

How close do we get?

Five hundred metres is the limit for boats with women on board, and the skipper keeps to it. From there the monasteries are clear.

Why is there no day by day plan?

Because the gulf changes with the wind from one day to the next. The skipper sets each day in the morning, which is how you end up anchored where it is calm.

What does the week cost, all in?

The table above is the total for the boat, skipper and starter pack, by month and boat. On top of it there is only the fuel, settled at the end, and whatever extras you choose.
